Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

At Beautiful Smile Dental, we enjoy educating our patients and talking to them about their dental health. We also encourage questions and are always keen to address your concerns.

We have compiled some of the questions we hear most often below. If your question is not addressed here, or if you would like further information, we encourage your call.

At Beautiful Smile Dental, our team is always eager to welcome area families into our dental clinics. And we have locations in Richmond and Walkerville for your convenience. We also offer evening hours in both places and Saturday appointments in Richmond.

As a new patient, we will work hard to make sure you feel at ease in our clinics. We take our time to get to know you, to answer your questions and address your concerns. When you are with us, you are never an 'appointment time' or 'number.' You are always a friend.

We provide the services patients need—patients of all ages—to maintain their oral health. However, we also offer advanced services like jaw joint therapy, teeth grinding and clenching treatments and cosmetic dentistry as well.

At Beautiful Smile Dental, we believe that a smile is the most beautiful thing you can wear, which is why we work hard to keep your smile healthy and viable.

Typically, and if time allows, you have a dental check-up and teeth clean at your first dental visit. Then we organise any treatment plans to restore your oral health.

If you’re ready to arrange a dental check-up, we look forward to your call.

Our dental teams understand family budgets and how critical it is to plan medical and dental treatments around life expenses. We will always advocate for you and help you get the treatments you need.

Depending on the nature of the treatment, we can sometimes provide dentistry on a timetable that considers your finances.

We can also recommend alternatives in some cases as well. For example, if you have a cosmetically flawed tooth, it is typically less expensive to choose dental bonding over a veneer.

If you’re having a dental procedure in our dental clinic, we can break down the costs for you before beginning treatment. This breakdown will include insurance benefits and patient portions. Please ask our friendly staff for assistance.

Additionally, we can claim directly to your private health insurance company through HICAPS.

And we are preferred providers for BUPA, Medibank Private (Richmond location only) and HCF.

The team at Beautiful Smile Dental always work hard to help you make the most of your dental health benefits. However, it is difficult to quote specific prices when it comes to dentistry as many procedures require pre-treatments and dental benefits also play a role.

If you would like to arrange a dental check-up, or if you have questions about insurance or financing, we welcome your call.

X-rays are an important part of preventive dentistry for a few reasons.

First, x-rays are an excellent way to help prevent future oral health conditions or uncover small issues before they become costly and time-absorbing problems in the future. For example, your dentist may discover a small infection below the gumline that, if treated today, can save you a toothache, root canal treatment and dental crown at a later date.

X-rays help your dentist learn about the anatomy of your smile behind the scenes as well. Is a wisdom tooth compromising a nerve, for example? Is a wisdom tooth encroaching on neighbouring teeth?

Additionally, x-rays taken periodically are an excellent way for your dentist to compare oral health changes. Did you have an emerging oral health issue last year? If so, is it improving? Is the treatment working? X-rays help answer these questions and more.

Your dentist in Walkerville or Richmond takes periodic x-rays to help keep your smile safe and comfortable. It is our goal to help you maintain long-term oral health, and x-rays play a role in that.

If you haven’t had a dental check-up in a while and would like to arrange an exam, or if you have any questions, we encourage your call.

At Beautiful Smile Dental, we think our dentists are the gentlest for miles—and so do many of our patients—but we also understand that oral health treatments can make people especially anxious. During your procedure, we will always take our time and make sure you’re feeling relaxed as we move through the steps to complete your therapy.

Additionally, we offer nitrous oxide for patients who need additional supportive measures at the dentist, and we totally understand why patients request our nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide is a safe relaxant, used by patients of all ages—including children. It is delivered in the form of a gas through a small nose mask, and the effects wear off as soon as we turn off the gas. This means you can drive home following treatment, return to work, and go on with your day.

Your dentists in Walkerville and Richmond always want you to get the treatment you need and the procedures you want. This is why they offer nitrous oxide—anxiety should never prevent you from having a healthy smile.

If you would like to arrange a dental check-up, exams for the family, or if you have questions about relaxation dentistry, we welcome your call.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Professional teeth whitening is a way to whiten your teeth safely, lifting brown and yellow tooth stains just in time for that wedding or other important event.

And your dentists in Walkerville and Richmond recommend professional teeth whitening over kits purchased online or in shops for several reasons.

First, when you whiten your teeth without the discretion of a dental professional, you cannot be sure that your teeth are in shape for such whitening. When under the care of one of our dentists, we make sure that teeth whitening is a safe option for you.

Next, gels purchased in shops can be unpredictable and may increase your risk for tooth sensitivity or even mild damage when whitening gel spills onto the gums.

Additionally, kits purchased in shops, according to many of our patients, do not provide optimal or uniform results—meaning you may be left with teeth of varying colours.

At Beautiful Smile Dental, we rely on in-house teeth whitening or custom trays with prescription-strength gel. The latter you use at home on your time. Our patients have been delighted with their results, and we hope you will be as well.

If you would like to book a consultation for teeth whitening, we welcome your call.

General Dentistry

Fluoride helps strengthen your teeth against cavities and breakage. This is why dentists recommend fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth healthy if you are at a higher risk for cavities.

When fluoride becomes incorporated in your tooth, it gives your enamel the strength to resist demineralization. Demineralization means the breaking down of calcium and phosphate minerals that protect your teeth. Typically, bacteria convert sugar into acid, and it is this acid that harms tooth enamel and leads to cavities. Fluoride is your way of defending your teeth against this onslaught.

It is a good idea to adopt an excellent oral hygiene routine at home, which includes brushing after meals with fluoride toothpaste. You should also see your dentist regularly for exams and cleans. If you are prone to cavities, your dentist in Walkerville or Richmond may recommend fluoride treatment to provide added protection.

For young children, we recommend assisting them with brushing. While fluoride is good for your teeth, you should not swallow toothpaste. A member of our team can provide further instructions on how best to brush your child’s teeth, including when you can let them take over the brushing.

If you would like to book a dental check-up for yourself, or yourself and your family members, we welcome your call.
